I was just wondering what you guys think of public school. And for those of you who do go to public school, what do you think of homeschooling.
I’m asking this because I’m considering going to public school next year.

Grace- I went to one for testing, and I DO NOT want to go back!!! Beleive me. I know it’s your decision, but I’m just telling you what I thought of it. At recess, all the 5th grade girls gathered around me and talked about Hilary Duff and Oprah and where they liked to shop and all kinds of other stuff homeschooled people probably wouldn’t discuss. There’s more too…but I can’t think of it right now. But Grace, it was horrible!!! It seemed cool, the first two days (since I had never been to school before) but after that, I wished I was back home. :(. But enough of my public school horror stories. Did someone have cupcakes?

There’s an old saying that you don’t really appreciate until you’re older – “The grass is always greener on the other side.” We naturally always believe that the things we don’t have are better than the things we do have. When I was a kid in Catholic school and then public school, I spent every day thinking how great life would be when I was done school and could do anything I wanted to do every day. Then I graduated from high school, and then went to college. Then I graduated from college and got a job, because I had to pay bills. Then I went back to school to get a master’s degree, so I could get a better job. Then I got a worse job for awhile, and then a better job, and then I went into business for myself. Then I met Grace & Abigail’s mom and got married, and a couple years later we bought a house had five kids. And then I had to take care of the house and watch the kids, and work a lot to pay for it all.
Now, I am very happy with life, and I love my family. I wouldn’t trade it for anything. But adult life is nothing like I expected it to be when I was in elementary school. There is no such thing as doing whatever you want to do every day, unless you want to be a street person and sleep on a sewer grate. A famous singer named Bob Dylan once wrote a song called “You Gotta Serve Somebody”. It was about the fact that we are all in service to someone. As the song goes, “It may be the devil, or it may be the Lord, but you gotta serve somebody”. That’s how life really works. Life bears no resemblance to what I expected in elementary school.
In a similar way, public school bears no resemblance to anything you guys could expect. It has many benefits, and it has a number of negatives. For one, you have to get up early, Really early. Every weekday. You can’t just decide to take a day off, or focus on this subject or that subject one day. Even your parents aren’t allowed to just let you stay home unless you’re really sick. You do basically the same thing every day, and you take direction from teachers you don’t know and whom you might or might not like. Every weekday, September through June.
You get on a bus with no seatbelts and take a bumpy ride to school. You come home on the same bus around three o’clock, and you tend to be tired and hungry (since you got up early and you didn’t have the luxury of snack-when-you-want access to your own refrigerator all day). So you generally eat something and then take a nap. Then you wake up for dinner, and then you start homework. Sometimes for 30 minutes, sometimes for a couple hours. Then you do it all over the next day. If it’s a night when you have other activities, well, the homework still has to get done. So you might be up until 10 or 11 doing math problems when you would really like to go to sleep. But you still have to catch the bus in the morning. That’s the thing about school — it’s relentless. There are no “personal days”. No days off at your discretion. You do what the school and the teachers tell you to do. You have this thing called “gym class” where you generally have to do stuff that nobody feels like doing and just makes everyone feel self-conscious.
Now, I am not trying to paint a completely negative picture. I think public school has improved a lot since I went there. We also live in a very nice school district. I’m sure there are many clubs and activities, cool field trips, shows, sports, and many other fun opportunities. But keep in mind that public school has to accept everyone, not just the nice kids. The public school system has to educate the back-biters, the complainers, the gossipers, the kids who have gotten themselves involved in things that kids shouldn’t be doing. There is no “nice kid” filter. Most homeschooled kids and public school kids who go to church youth groups are nice kids, since their parents are raising them properly. Not all kids have these benefits. Some kids are less fortunate – they might have abusive parents or many other problems. The public school has to take everyone, regardless of the problems they have.
Public school isn’t all bad. It might be worth trying. But the one thing we should never do is assume that the grass has to be greener on the other side. It’s usually not.

Just wanted to let you know Grace that I didn’t mean to make you think I don’t like schools, I accually used to wished that I could go to school too! It’s just that your the first friend I met that homeschools, is near my age, and is practically my neighbor! So if you want to go to school go ahead. But over the last 3 years I got a little taste of public school that made me accually thankful I was homeschooled. See, we have a neighborhood that has a lot of kids around my age. And well we would start group games of man hunt. It was pretty fun untill the kids didn’t want to play anymore. They all started talking and having fun doing it (to MUCH fun almost). It’s basically what Leslie said. There was a lot of bad laguage too. So Lydia and I just left.
